- Textris 4.0 (C) Copyright 1996 Charon Software, All Rights Reserved
- Formerly Copyright (c) 1992-1994 Thomas G. Hanlin III
-
-
- Textris requires an EGA or better color display and roughly 256k
- of available conventional memory.
-
- Textris is a twist on the familiar Tetris game. Rather than
- blocks of varying shapes, it has falling letters from which you
- can make words. Words must be from 3-7 letters long, and must
- not be capitalized names or trademarks.
-
- Spelling counts! You may find that playing Textris helps improve
- your spelling. It'll help polish up those Scrabble (or Scramble)
- skills, too.
-
- Of course, the main point is to have fun!
-
- You can make words either horizontally or vertically. Textris
- will take the longest word it can find. If it finds two words of
- the same length, it will pick the first it comes across. In this
- context, it may help to know that Textris scans from left to
- right before checking top to bottom.
-
- You move using the arrow keys. Either the spacebar or down arrow
- can be used to make a letter drop faster. The keys are shown on
- the screen, so you can refer to them as needed.
-
- If you prefer to have the spacebar and down arrow drop a letter
- immediately, you can toggle that on with the F4 function key.
-
- If you'd like to have a preview of the next letter, you can
- toggle that on with the F6 function key.
-
- Sounds can be toggled off and on with the F8 function key.
-
- Oh-- one more thing! On occasion, a blank tile will appear. You
- can turn this into the letter of your choice by hitting the
- corresponding key on the keyboard. Be quick, though! If the tile
- touches down before you press a key, it will turn into a random
- letter.
-
- Added something resembling mouse handling, for 3-button mice
- only. The left and right buttons function as left and right
- arrow keys, and the middle button functions as a down arrow.
-
- Suggestions, comments, and registrations will be appreciated.

- A Short History of Textris:
-
- Textris 4.0, 12/13/96:
-
- This is the newest version of Textris, part of the "Formerly Hanlin '97"
- collection; the next version of Textris (probably 5.0), to be released
- in 1997 should offer SoundBlaster support, multiple levels, strategy,
- improved graphics and game play, etc. Watch for this in the near future.
-
-
-
- Textris 2.0, 07/08/93:
-
- Added CATALOG.TXT.
-
- The dictionary has been greatly expanded.
-
- A variety of dictionary compression techniques have been
- employed to reduce the amount of disk space Textris requires.
-
- Added something resembling mouse handling, for 3-button mice
- only. The left and right buttons function as left and right
- arrow keys, and the middle button functions as a down arrow.
-
- Speed increases happen less frequently. However, the top
- speed is considerably faster than it used to be! This adds a
- little excitement back into the game for skilled players.
-
- The settings for "preview next letter", "drop down" and
- "noise" are now preserved when you exit the game, so you
- don't have to reset them every time you start Textris.
-
- In the registered version, a new utility has been added to
- make it easier to customize the Textris dictionary.
-
-
-
- Textris 1.1, 11/25/92:
-
- The default action of the spacebar or left arrow key is to
- make a letter drop faster. If you prefer to have the letter
- drop immediately instead, this is now also possible. Use
- the F4 function key to switch between the two modes.
-
- A preview window which shows the next letter has been added.
- You can toggle it on or off with the F6 function key.
-
- Some folks reported keyboard buffer overflows on slower
- machines. The keyboard is now cleared more frequently,
- which should solve the problem. If not, let me know.
-
- The word dictionary has been expanded.
-
- The REGISTER.TXT file has been renamed ORDER.FRM, since that
- seems to be the more standard nomenclature.
-
-
-
- Textris 1.0, 10/29/92:
-
- This is the initial release of Textris.
